What is sciatica? The sciatic nerve is a very large nerve which originates from the spinal cord and spreads into the disc spaces and then join up to form the sciatic nerve. The sciatic nerve passes from the spine into the buttock, then into the back of the thighs and legs. The sciatica nerve is responsible for controlling the sensation and function to the legs & feet so you can see that if any of these parts of the body are injured in any way, and causes pressure on this nerve, it will cause either direct pain or what they call referred pain.
