Give Your Kids Good Posture

Do you remember your parents telling you to sit up straight and to stop slouching?

Well you were lucky if they did!

Good posture starts from before you are even born! The way that you are carried in the womb, the way you are held as a baby, and then progressively by the habits you form with the activities you undertake.

So why is our society in a slow decline to poor posture? We are forming bad habits from a young age and it carries though to adulthood. And don’t forget the daily mini-traumas that have more impact than you’d think!

If we adults suffer traumas (a bicycle crash, fall off a ladder, have a car accident etc.) we are checked out by our local chiropractor and supportive health professionals. So who don’t we do this for our children? Our kids are just finding their feet, learning the ways of the world, and they have accidents! They fall out of trees, fall off their bikes, get dunked by waves at the beach, and are swung around but their arms… Being a kid is full on! It is important to experience these mini traumas, but it is also important to make sure they have not affected your child’s posture.

Children are less physically active these days with the invention of the computer game, PlayStation and so forth. This means that our children sit on the school bus, sit at school, sit in front of the TV, sit in front of the computer. SIT, SIT SIT! Our kids are forming poor habits because we are allowing them to sit, and sit poorly, all the time!

We all know how important it is to have our work-station ergonomics set up to your ideal height as to alleviate the pressure on your adult spine, so why aren’t we doing it for our kids?

Tips for good posture.

– Make sure that your kids have good work-stations at home. Computers should be at eye level, feet firmly placed on the ground, and sit up straight!

– Minimize computer and TV time! It will not only help your kids’ posture, but will also improve your family connection.

– Be more physically active – Go to the park, run around, join a sporting team! An active spine is a healthy spine.

– Get your kids walk to school!

– NAG! We are giving you permission to nag! If your kids slouch, pull them up on it and make them aware of it. They might find it annoying now but they will thank you in the long run

Is your neck causing you pain?

Many things can cause pain in the neck such as traumas and poor posture.. but you don’t have to suffer!

The neck is a delicate and complex structure. It is more mobile than the rest of the spine and houses some critical pathways, both neurological (spinal cord) and functional (esophagus, trachea, vertebral arties etc). Due to the greater capacity for movement in the neck there is also an increase in the risk of damage and pain.

It is increasingly more common for people to have desk jobs and thus we, as a being designed for movement and standing, are spending majority of our days on our backsides. Sitting at a computer, and sitting poorly at that, causes our backs to slump forward and the positioning of our heads to move further and further over our shoulders. The less active we are and the more time we spend sitting the more likely we are to have poor posture. This poor posture means that our heads are no longer positioned above our shoulders as they should be and the weight of our heads increases.

For every inch your head moves forward, it’s weight doubles. In doubling the weight of your head the structures surrounding your neck must work harder and longer to support you.

There are many factors that can affect your neck. Traumas such as whiplash cause an acute onset of pain; whereas daily stressors cause a slow build up of muscle tension and a gradual pain.  Furthermore it is possible that your neck pain is actually a sign of a misalignment elsewhere in your spine!

Chiropractic care is based on the premise of restoration of health through restoration of your posture. In today’s society the ever increasingly sedentary lifestyles that we are leading are causing a shift towards poor posture. It is not the norm! And there is something you can do about it!

In consulting your local Spine and Health chiropractors on the Lower North Shore you will undergo a digital spinal analysis to establish your current posture. The chiro’s in Crows Nest, North Sydney, Mosman and Gladesville will be able to construct an action plan with you to tackle any problems you may have structurally and help you on the road to a better posture.

How to be a Healthier More Attractive YOU!

Have you ever noticed that the people who catch your eye tend to be standing taller than the rest?

Poor posture affects the ability of the body to function. Just like stepping on a hose and lessening or stopping the flow of water, having a vertebra out of alignment we can see the same effect on the spinal nerves. In diminishing the flow of information through your body you are affecting the ability of it to function!

How do vertebrae become misaligned? There are chemical, emotional and physical stressors that can cause misalignment and they all result in a change in your posture, which ultimately affect your health.

How does health affect your appearance?

People who have health problems, are in pain, and/or lack self confidence tend to have hunched posture.

Take notice, next time you go out, of the posture of the walkers by. What did you observe? Those who stand taller with their heads directly above their shoulders seem happier, more confident and secure within themselves don’t they?

Now it’s your turn – Stand in front of a mirror and look at yourself in your natural posture. Now stand up straight! See the difference?

It’s true that we are attracted to happy, healthy people and you can have that too!

Your ideal posture will:

–       make you stand taller

–       stretch out your abdominal muscles and make you appear slimmer

–       bring your shoulders back and push your chest out

–       improve your proprioception (innate knowledge of the placement of your body) making your movements smoother, easier and less clumsy

–       improve your ability to breath by opening out your rib cage

–       improve your clarity of thoughts

–       reduce your stress / improve our ability to deal with stressful situations

So how can you have your ideal posture, improve your health and subsequently be one of those people who “stands taller than the rest” !?
